COOPER'S CREEK AMATEUR TURF CLUB MEETING.
The first annual meeting of the Cooper's Creek Amateur Turf Club was held on the Old Course at Innamincka on December 26 and 27, in the presence of a large concourse of people. Rain set in, in the early part of the first day's racing, but fortunately cleared off towards the afternoon, and the course was perfect. In every way the races were a great success, Mr. E. T. Hartley carried out the duties of Secretary an able manner. Mr. F. H. Peate acted as Judge and Mr. John Richardson as Starter, and both gave every satisfaction, Romeo and Rocket ran a dead heat in the Jumbo Stakes for first place. A sad fatal accident occurred in the Hurdle Race. Mr. Edward J. Hampton, aged twenty three, of Ashby Vale, who was riding Starlight, came to grief over the first hurdle, the horse rolling on top of him, causing internal haemorrhage to set in, and also concussion of the brain. The unfortunate gentleman remained unconscious up to the time of his death, which occurred next day, being just twenty-four hours, after the accident. An inquest was .considered unnecessary, and the funeral the following day was attended by a large number of people including all the jockeys in riding colours. The calamity cast quite a gloom on the proceedings. ...
