Gold was discovered here by Ted Hefferman in 1892, and he named his discovery "Day Dawn", after the time of day that he pegged his claim. The area developed rapidly from 1898 when the famous "Great Fingall" mine was established, and the town of Day Dawn boomed. Flooding and other problems closed the mine around World war II, and Day Dawn soon faded away. He was working as a Miner before 1914. 10 Thomas married Louisa Thompson, daughter of William Thomas Denis Thompson and Mary Josephine Deery, on Dec 28, 1892 in Armidale, New South Wales, Australia.1 (Louisa Thompson was born on Aug 21, 1872 in Eureka, Shortland District, New Zealand,11 12 died on Sep 25, 1944 in Perth, Western Australia, Australia 13 and was buried on Sep 27, 1944 in Karrakatta, Western Australia, Australia 14.). The cause of her death was Coronary occlusion following Arteriole Thrombosis/ Gangrene left leg.
