Alfred Jefferis Turner - from Wikipedia: Dec 31, 2019, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

Alfred Jefferis Turner (3 October 1861, in Canton \endash 29 December 1947, in Brisbane, Australia) was a pediatrician and noted amateur entomologist. He was the son of missionary Frederick Storrs-Turner. He introduced the use of diphtheria antitoxin to Australia in 1895. He was known by the nickname "Gentle Annie".[1]

Doctor Turner was a resident of Dauphin Terrace, Highgate Hill, Brisbane.[2][3]

The Jefferis Turner Centre for mothercraft was opened in 1952 as part of the Queensland Government's Maternal and Child Welfare program. In 1986, its role was changed to provide short term respite care for intellectually disabled children. It is located in the heritage building Fairy Knoll in Ipswich.

Medical career

Doctor Jefferis Turner studied medicine at University College, London graduating with first class honours. He emigrated to Australia in 1888 and the next year became first medical officer of the Children's Hospital, Brisbane.

His clinical research and influence helped to reduce the number of children's deaths in Queensland. He made notable contributions in the areas of diphtheria anti-toxin, hookworm-induced anaemia, lead poisoning, improvement of the quality of milk supply for children, health education for expectant and nursing mothers, and the establishment of antenatal clinics in Queensland.[1]

Doctor Turner played a pivotal role in combating the bubonic plague epidemic of 1900 and in making the notification of tuberculosis compulsory in 1904.

Due to his mild manner and love of children, he acquired the nickname of 'Gentle Annie'.[4]

Entomological activity

In addition to his medical career, Turner was a noted amateur entomologist specialising in Lepidoptera. He left a collection of over 50,000 moths to the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Canberra.[5]

Alfred married Hilda Constance Roehricht, daughter of Richard Hugo Oswald Roehricht and Isabel Matilda Collet Hampton, on Feb 2, 1898 in Sandgate, Queensland, Australia.1 (Hilda Constance Roehricht was born on Dec 30, 1870 in Queensland, Australia 8 and died on Jul 22, 1965 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia 9.)

Saint Nicholas's Church Sandgate, Queensland, Australia.

A newspaper article "Wedding at Sandgate" in the Brisbane Courier, on Feb 3, 1898, in Queensland, Australia. 10
WEDDING AT SANDGATE.
Turner\emdash Roehricht.
The wedding of Dr. A. Jefferis Turner and Miss Hilda Roehricht, youngest daughter of the late Mr. R. H. O. Roehricht, of the Railway Department, was solemnised at St. Nicolas Church, Sandgate, yesterday morning. The wedding party was confined to the immediate friends of the bride and bridegroom. Canon Matthews, who had hastened his return from Warwick for the purpose, performed the ceremony. The bride, who was attired in a simple gown of soft white silk and small white hat, was given away by her brother, Mr. Oswald Roehricht. The two bridesmaids\emdash Miss Aline Townsend and Miss Hilda Parker\emdash wore pretty dresses of white hailstone muslin over buttercup silk, with long sashes of the same shade, and hats en suite. The bride was attended by two little pages, Masters Arthur and Turner Paul, the sons of Dr. and Mrs. F. Paul, who wore white holland suits and sailor hats. After the ceremony refreshments were served at the house of Dr. and Mrs. Paul, and soon after Dr. and Mrs. Turner left for Brisbane, en route for Sydney and the Blue Mountains, where the honeymoon is to be spent. Dr. and Mrs. Turner will return to town at the beginning of March. Many pretty and valuable presents were received by the bride and bridegroom.

[In the above article, the "The bride was attended by two little pages, Masters Arthur and Turner Paul, the sons of Dr. and Mrs. F. Paul" refers to Arthur and Turner; and their parents Dr Paul and Mrs Paul. Dr Paul's next younger brother was husband to this bride's sister \emdash and it is possible (not confirmed) that one of the bridesmaids may be related to Dr Paul's second wife (the families were all friends, or lived near each other, in Sandgate, Queensland, Australia).]
