She was involved in a court case concerning illegal liquor sales. Mattie Thompson was fined £10 on a 'sly grog' charge on Jan 8, 1931 in Perth, Western Australia, Australia. 20 Mattie held a "Gallon Licence". This permitted a grocery store to sell alcohol in minimum lots of 1 gallon (i.e. 6 large bottles of beer).
The following appeared in the West Australian newspaper:
"Mattie Edith Thompson, through Mr Coleman, pleaded not guilty to a charge of having served a Bottle of Beer from her store for which she held only a gallon licence. Plainclothes Constable Mitchell said that he saw a man named William Smith leaving the store on December 11 with a bottle of Beer in his hip pocket. Witness took Smith back to the shop and a woman assistant said that she did not sell the beer but gave it to Smith. When Smith insisted that he had paid 1/6 for it, the assistant said that during the morning' he had paid for half a dozen bottles, and the bottle in his possession was part of the order. The liquor book failed to show the entry and a record of the money paid could not be produced. Mr. Coleman claimed that there was no evidence of sale. The police, he said, should have submitted evidence from Smith but that had not been done. A fine of £10 was imposed."

She was involved in a court case concerning illegal liquor sales on Mar 20, 1935 in Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia. 21 The following article appeared in the Daily News:
"ILLEGAL LIQUOR SALE
Twenty Pounds Fines
On a charge of having sold two bottles of liquor, contrary to the terms of her licence, Mattie Edith Thompson, store keeper, of Douro Road, South Fremantle, was fined £10 by Mr. H. J. Craig, S.M., and Mr. F. Mann, J.P., in Fremantle Police Court today. Mrs. Thompson was fined an additional £10 for having failed to keep a book showing the correct record of liquor purchases and sales. Evidence for the prosecution showed that Mrs. Thompson was the holder of a gallon licence and on Saturday, February 23, a police agent, acting under instructions from Plain clothes Constables Kelman and Mitchell, purchased two bottles of beer from the defendant, together with a pound of butter and 6d worth of cloves. Later the police returned to the shop, when it was found that the defendant had not kept a book showing her dealings in liquor."

Mattie was living at 34 Duro Rd. South Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia in 1936/1943 22

She was involved in a court case concerning illegal liquor sales on Jul 10, 1936 in Perth, Western Australia, Australia. 23 The following article appeared in the Daily News:

NIGHT VIGIL BY POLICE IN LIQUOR CHARGE
Admitting a charge of having sold liquor during prohibited hours Mattie Edith Thompson, holder of a gallon licence for premises at the corner of Duoro road and Chester Street, South Fremantle, was fined £12 10s with 12s costs in the Fremantle Police Court today.
The Bench was occupied by Mr. J. M. Farrell and Mrs. B. Laidlaw, J's.P. Plain-clothes Constable Kelman said that on June 20 at 10 p.m. a police agent was sent to the defendant's pre mises. Half an hour later he returned with a sugar bag containing groceries, four bottles of beer and two bottles of stout and produced a docket for the goods.
'In company with Plain-clothes Constable Mitchell,' witness said, 'we returned to the shop, but on our approach the lights were extinguished. We knocked for some time and called out 'Police here' but there was no response.'
Mrs. Thompson's son came home on his motor bike about 11.40 p.m.
He said he would see if his mother was home and in a few minutes he informed us that there was no one in side and as he could not get in, he drove away.
We remained there until 2.20 a.m. and during the interim Mrs. Thompson's son rode round different streets in' the vicinity surveying the scene to see if we had left.
At 2.20 a.m. we found a door in the yard open and saw Mrs. Thompson run through the house.
A search was made and she was eventually traced to the bathroom which was locked from the inside. After repeated knocks she opened the door, but refused to answer any questions and then feigned to faint'
Kelman said that two days later he made an inspection of Mrs Thompson's sales books and found that between January 1 and June 20 she had sold 608 bottles of ale and stout, 137 gallons of wine, and 28 dozen nips of stout.
Mr. F. G. Unmack, who represented the defendant, said that when the police arrived Mrs. Thompson had retired. She heard a noise in front of her shop and suspecting burglars took her money and locked herself in the bathroom. For the past twelve months she had traded without a conviction.
Inspector Simpson pressed for a heavy penalty.
'Mrs. Thompson has been pretty cunning,' he declared, 'and it has taken us some time to catch her.'

She was involved in a court case concerning her Liquor License renewal at the State Licensing Court on Dec 4, 1936 in Perth, Western Australia, Australia. 24 The following article appeared in the West Australian newspaper:

"LICENSING COURT.
Police Oppose One Renewal.
The State Licensing Court, consisting of Messrs. M. J. Cahill (chairman), J. W. Burgess and E. H. Barker, sat at the Fremantle Courthouse yesterday, and renewed all licences in the Fremantle district. Inspector Simpson, on behalf of the police, opposed the application of Mrs. Mattie Edith Thompson for the renewal of the gallon licence conducted by her in conjunction with a grocery store at the corner of Douro Road and Chester street, South Fremantle. Mrs. Thompson was represented by Mr. F. Unmack. The police objection was based on the ground that the premises were not conducted properly, it being alleged by Inspector Simpson that the licensee was a seller of sly grog. There had been five convictions recorded against her for licensing offences, he said, since 1931, numerous complaints had been received by the police, and the place had proved a continual source of worry. In 1935 there had been two separate offences and under the Licensing Act this could debar a person from holding a licence. Evidence concerning the last conviction on July 10 last, for selling liquor after hours was given by Plainclothes Constable J. Kelman, by whom the charge had been laid. Be said that on that date Mrs. Thompson supplied a police agent with six bottles of beer at 10 p.m. In an effort to interview the licensee witness had to wait until 2 a.m. because all the doors had been locked. The charge had been lodged as a result of a complaint from a woman concerning liquor supplied to her 17-year-old son. Sergeant J. Lowry, stationed at Beaconsfield, said that he had warned Mrs. Thompson several times. In asking the board to renew the application, Mr. Unmack said that the licensee had already been penalised for her wrongdoing. The Chairman: It has not had very much effect. In granting a renewal, Mr. Cahill said that the board did so with reluctance, and suggested that the police should keep a close eye on the premises in the future. In the event of any further conviction the Court would have to consider seriously the cancellation of the licence."

She was working as Proprietress in Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia in 1943 25

A newspaper article for Liquor Licensing appeared in the Daily News, on Jun 17, 1946, in Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia. 26
Mattie Edith Thompson applied to ransfer her "Gallon Liquor License" to Gladstone Henry Richardson of 3 Torrens Ave. North Cottesloe, Western Australia.

She was involved in a court case concerning assault on her person on Jan 28, 1948 in Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia. 27 The following article appeared in the Daily News:

Lodger Hits Landlady
Dorothy Wansborough (30), of South Terrace, Fremantle, was fined £2. with 2/6 costs in Fremantle Police Court today for having assaulted Mrs. Mattie Edith Thompson.
Mrs. Thompson, a lodging house keeper, of South Terrace, said Wansborough had been a lodger but she had told her to go.
When she found her room locked, Wansborough smacked her face and tore her dress.
