John Collet Stratfold was born at Potsgrove on 10th May 1751, where he was baptised on 17th August 1751, the first child of Robert Stratfold and his wife Elizabeth Smith who was given the middle name of Collet. It would appear that John married (1) Anne Beazer at Langley Marsh in Buckinghamshire on 30th August 1773 and that he may have had a son named John Collet Stratfold who was born shortly thereafter. The records show that a John Stratfold Collet married Martha Gamby in 1789, but it would appear highly unlikely that it was the younger John, as he would have only been around 15 or 16 years of age. It is therefore more likely that the older John Stratfold Collet was married twice and that his second wife was the much younger Martha.
John Collet Stratfold was have been thirty-eight when he married (2) Martha Sambee [Gamby] at Husborne Crawley, near Woburn in Bedfordshire, on 29th July 1789. Martha was born at Husborne Crawley in 1766 where she was baptised on 4th January 1767, the daughter of Daniel Gamby and his wife Elizabeth Hart. The marriage produced nine children who were all born and baptised at Woburn. John Stratfold Collett died at Woburn in 1811, the same year that his last child was born there. In the Bailey's British Directory of 1784 John Stratfold Collet was listed as a grocer.
